Summer Family Session at Succop Nature Park (ft. Gemma the Goodest Girl)
Pittsburgh 2025 summer really said “sauna, but make it scenic.” It was 95°, humid, and we were dodging goose poop like it was an Olympic sport. But even so, this photogenic family and Succop Nature Park absolutely delivered. Between the willow trees by the pond, soft evening light, and one extremely adorable pup named Gemma, this family session was a total success. If you’re looking for Pittsburgh family photos that feel relaxed, playful, and very you, Succop’s a winner.
Why Succop Nature Park Works Beautifully for Families
big Variety in a Small Walk
Succop gives you a ton of looks without trekking miles — ponds with sweeping willow branches, open fields for running (read: kid energy outlet), tree-lined paths for snuggly walking shots, and that classic, glowy sky at golden hour. We rotate through spots fast so kids (and pups) stay engaged and happy.
Breezy, Candid-First Posing
I’m a Pittsburgh family photographer who believes the best images happen between the “poses.” I’ll direct you just enough to feel comfortable — then we let real interactions take over. (If you've ever talked to me about this in real life, you're probably familiar with my motto: "less posing, more prompting").Think walking hand-in-hand, twirling dresses, parents stealing a quick hug while the little ones show me their best dinosaur roar. The chaos is the magic.
Dog-Friendly (Because They’re Family, Too)
Gemma absolutely stole the show — shiny coat, polite head tilts, 11/10 treat motivation. Succop has plenty of space to keep dogs calm and focused (and paths where we can step away from distractions). Pro tip: bring a plain leash, a favorite toy, and someone who can take the pup for a lap while we grab a few two-legged-only shots.
Real Talk: It Was 95°… and Still Gorgeous
Heat-Proof Game Plan
When Pittsburgh turns into a hair-frizzing steam room, we:
- Shoot late (golden hour = cooler + dreamier light)
- Prioritize shade (those willow trees are MVPs)
- Keep movement light (walks, cuddles, seated snuggles)
- Plan a quick pace (short bursts at each spot)
- Bring the essentials (water, blotting wipes, tiny fan, bug spray)
And because real life is real life: yes, we navigated a few goose “landmines.” I scouted the cleanest paths, we laughed, we side-stepped, and we ended with images that feel like summer — warm, glowy, and a happy.
What to Wear for Summer Photos (Without Melting)
- Light, breathable fabrics: cotton, linen, airy knits.
- Colors that love nature: soft neutrals, dusty blues, sage, warm creams. They pop beautifully against green trees and golden fields.
- Shoes you can move in: Succop is mostly grass and gravel; think sandals with straps, clean sneakers, or flats.
- For pups: a simple collar or neutral harness; tuck waste bags in a pocket so they’re not in photos.
- Keep it real: if your toddler insists on the superhero cape, we’ll get a few with it — those are the photos you’ll never forget.
A Few Favorite Moments from This Session
Willow Walks: Hand-in-hand, slow and sweet under the willow tree while Gemma trotted like she owned the place.
Pond Reflections: The light on the water gave us that soft, painted background — chef’s kiss.
Blame Game: I have a few really great prompts to get the most genuine laughs from families - and sometimes the most outraged faces as well (hint: it seems Dad was unaware he was the loudest snorer in the household).
If you love relaxed, personality-packed photos with a little sparkle, Succop Nature Park is a top pick.
