How I Photograph Real, Candid Moments (Not "Posed Perfection")
If you’ve ever wondered how I get those real, relaxed, joy-filled family moments during a session—this post is for you. As a Pittsburgh family photographer, my goal is never to pose you stiffly and ask everyone to smile at the camera... that's actually my nightmare. My goal is to create space for your family to show up exactly as you are and capture the beauty in that.
Why I Don’t Focus on “Perfect”
Because perfect doesn’t exist. And even if it did, it wouldn’t tell the story of your family. Real moments — the kind that make you feel something — happen in between the poses. When your kid is climbing into your lap, when someone makes a goofy face, when you’re belly laughing at something totally unplanned.
What a Session Looks Like with Me
We’ll start by chatting and letting everyone settle in, letting the kids get to know me and warm up. I’ll give gentle direction so you never feel awkward or have that awful but-what-do-I-do-with-my-hands moment. Mostly, I’ll guide and prompt you into movement: snuggling, walking, playing, dancing. It’s all about creating opportunities for connection, not controlling every detail.
I Watch for the In-Betweens
The best moments aren’t the ones you force, but the ones that unfold when you aren't planning them and you least expect them. A sideways smirk, a hand squeeze, a shared giggle. I’m always watching for those little cues that show who you are and how you love each other.
It’s About Connection, Not Control
You don’t need to stress about your kids behaving a certain way or "cooperating". You don’t need to look perfect or act perfect. You just need to show up and be present with your people. I’ll handle the rest.
