How to Prepare Your Kids for a Family Photoshoot

As a family photographer here in Pittsburgh, one of the most common questions I get is: "How do I get my kids to cooperate for photos?" First of all—don’t stress about this. I promise, we’ll make it fun! And second, "cooperate" is one of my least favorite words in this scenario. We aren't going to get your kids to "cooperate", we are going to get them to have fun and enjoy the time spent with you! Because "cooperating" photos aren't the photos you want, I promise. You want joyful, authentic, silly, personality-showcasing photos! So here are my favorite tried-and-true tips to help prepare your kids (and yourself) for a relaxed, joyful session.

1) Set the tone with a positive attitude

Kids take their cues from us, so be excited! Start hyping up our session several weeks in advance and make sure to tell them how excited you are about it and how fun it is going to be. Chances are they'll think it's cool because you do!

2) keep it fun and relaxed

Family sessions with me are definitely not sitting still and saying "cheese." We play games, explore, tickle, tell jokes, and capture your real connections. Tell your kids it’ll be like going on an adventure together!

3) Pack the essentials

Snacks, water, wipes, and some favorite small toys can all go a long way. Comfort is key, especially for younger kiddos. If we need a break, we’ll take one!

4) Choose comfortable clothing

I know we all want Pinterest worthy photos, but we also have to be realistic too. If the kids are uncomfortable, it's going to show in the photos! Soft, non-restrictive outfits that they can move in are best. Avoid anything itchy or fussy. And don’t forget a backup outfit—just in case!

5) get them involved

Let them help choose an outfit or pick a toy/snack to bring. Feeling included helps them feel more confident and cooperative, and what kid doesn't like to feel like they're in charge?

6) Trust the process

Some of the best moments come when kids are just being kids. Don’t worry if things get silly or a little chaotic, and try not to reprimand or scold for not "listening" or "cooperating". Remembering, there is no such thing in our family session - just kids being themselves. That's where the magic happens!

At the end of the day, it’s all about capturing your family’s unique story—giggles, wiggles, and all! I’m here to guide you through the whole process and make sure everyone has a great time.
